Excessive skin dryness is a common problem, especially in the elderly. This problem is commonly found in areas like forearms, elbows and lower legs. The skin on these areas feels rough or scaly, accompanied by an intense itch that can be distressing. There are many reasons that can cause excessive skin dryness, such as hot baths, prolonged use of air conditioning or heaters, overuse of soaps and perfumes, sun exposure, dehydration, and stress. Excessive skin dryness needs to be treated promptly because it can result in eczema or dermatitis. It is recommended to limit showers or baths to less than 10 minutes, avoid hot showers or baths, use a mild cleanser and body soap, apply moisturizer right after showers or baths, and use a humidifier if needed. There are several forms of moisturizers such as lotions, creams, and ointments. Lighter lotions may be sufficient during warmer days.
