Homocysteine is a type of amino acid found in the blood. It is produced by the breakdown of proteins. Cholesterol is a lipoprotein. There are mainly two types of cholesterol which are the bad cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein) and good cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein). High cholesterol is said when there are too much bad cholesterol and too little good cholesterol in the body. Both high homocysteine and cholesterol levels lead to coronary heart disease, atherosclerosis, heart attack, and stroke. High homocysteine and cholesterol levels lead to the formation of plaques in the blood vessels which causes narrowing of the blood vessels. Plaques that build up can also form thrombus and leads to obstruction of the blood vessels in other areas of the body. Homocysteine and cholesterol levels can be detected with blood tests. There are many causes leading to high homocysteine and cholesterol level, hence it should be identified and treated.
