Hyperpigmentation is a common problem affecting people of all races. Some parts of the skin become darker than the surrounding skin as a result of the deposition of melanin in the skin. It is more often found in areas of the body which are frequently exposed to the sun. A few common forms of hyperpigmentation are freckles, melasma, and age spots. There are many reasons that can cause hyperpigmentation. Some of them include increasing age, excessive exposure to ultraviolet light from the sun or tanning beds, hormonal changes due to pregnancy or oral contraceptives use, and acne scars. Hyperpigmentation can be prevented by protecting yourself from the sun, for example wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen, avoid direct sunlight during the middle of the day, wear protective clothing and avoid tanning beds. Treatment options of hyperpigmentation include creams and laser treatment. These creams used to reduce pigmentation contains hydroquinone, tretinoin, and cortisone.
