Overview of Inflammation

Inflammation is a state where the bodys immune system comprising white cell and other chemicals are activated in response to foreign infiltration. This can be germs like bacteria, viruses or fungus, object or irritants or bodys own cell/tissue. Inflammation can be acute or chronic with the latter can result in the change in the tissue structure due to the fibrosis process called remodelling. Inflammation is a way our body to protect us against foreign infiltration. It can, however, bring harm as well especially if it attacks our own body for example in conditions such as psoriasis and inflammatory bowel disease. The hallmark of inflammation is swelling, redness, pain, loss of function and heat. Inflammation can be relieved with anti-inflammatory medications such as steroids, antihistamines and NSAIDs drugs. It is also helpful if the cause of inflammation is treated as well like infection with anti-bacterial/viral/fungal.
