Mouth and Throat Irritation or also known as sore mouth and throat is a common presenting complaint amongst oncology patients. It occurs due to the rapid turnover of growing cells in the mucosal lining of the mouth and throat which are highly sensitive to chemotherapy or radiation.
Signs and Symptoms
Burning sensation of the mouth Redness in the mouth Difficulty swallowing Cracked lips Drooling White spots or swollen lips Dry, cracked or blister tongue
Common Causes
High dose of chemotherapy drugs such as 5-Florouracil Radiation therapy to the head and neck Young and elderly people receiving cancer treatment Smoking Alcohol intake Poor dental health Poorly fitting dentures
