Overview

Multidrug Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) refers to tuberculosis that does not respond to at least isoniazid and rifampicin, the 2 most potent anti-TB drugs. Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection mainly affecting the lungs which is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Signs and Symptoms

Persistent cough, Hemoptysis, Weight loss, Fever, Loss of appetite, Night sweats, Chest pain, Difficulty breathing

Common Causes

Not completing the full course of treatment, Defaulting follow ups, Incorrect consumption of medications, Poor quality of medication, Incorrect treatment given by doctors

Risk Factors

Older age group, People living far from health facilities, Poverty, Immunocompromised people, People living in overcrowded areas, Underlying respiratory diseases

Investigation Techniques

Full blood count, Chest X-ray, Tuberculin skin test, Acid fast bacilli (AFB) test, Sputum culture and sensitivity, Nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT)

Treatment and Prevention

Other anti-TB medications, Fluoroquinolone, Wear face masks at all times, Stay away from overcrowded areas, Strictly follow the treatment course, BCG vaccination for newborns and infants
