Severe chronic pain is a term explaining a long standing pain which means pain that last for weeks and months. A better definition is any pain that last for more than 12 weeks is a chronic pain. Severe chronic pain can be caused by many diseases or conditions. Some of the conditions which cause severe chronic pain are cancer, worsening joint inflammation or arthritis, nerve issues, and post-surgery. There are few treatments for this condition. The pain can be manage by using strong painkillers (opioids) such as morphine. In some cases, stronger painkillers like fentanyl, hydromorphone, and methadone will be used. There are several procedures can be done to relieve chronic pain such as nerve block. Some people believe that lifestyle modification plays a major role in relieving pain such as yoga and tai chi. Ultimately, the best way to relieve the pain permanently is by treating the underlying condition which causing the pain.
