Skin antiseptic is an agent which helps to slow or stop the growth of microorganisms on the body surface. It is frequently used for handwash for the medical professional before performing any sort of examinations or procedures, preparation of patient's skin before surgery, wound cleansing and disinfecting mucous membrane such as the vagina. There are different types of skin antiseptic such as Chlorhexidine, Hydrogen peroxide or Permanganate. Each product is used at different sites but they serve the same purpose, which is eliminating microorganisms residing on the skin to prevent further infection. Although it has a beneficial effect in medical settings, it is recommended not to be used for long periods of time as it will cause irritation or chemical burns if not used appropriately.
