Thick scaly spots on the skin can be seen in many types of skin disease. Examples of skin diseases with thick scaly skin are psoriasis, eczema, contact dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, ichthyosis, actinic keratosis, and lichen planus. The outer layer of the skin called epidermis contains dead cells that renew frequently. When damage is caused to the outer layer of the skin, the process gets disrupted. Hence, thickening and scaling of the skin occur. Some signs and symptoms associated with thick scaly spots on the skin are itchiness, redness, pain, burning sensation, swelling and skin dryness. Some of the risk factors which can lead to thick scaly spots on the skin are ageing, extreme exposure to sunlight, injury to the skin, constant chemical exposure to the skin, underlying medical conditions and certain medications. It can be diagnosed through history and examination of the skin. Treatment depends on the underlying cause.
