Overview
Tremor is the uncontrollable shaking in one or more parts of the body. It is a common problem, affecting the hands most of the time. It is usually caused by an issue in the part of the brain that controls movements. Tremors can be caused by a number of reasons, for example, hyperthyroidism, alcohol abuse, and withdrawal, anxiety, use of some medications, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, stroke, and brain injury. Tremor is not a life-threatening issue, but it can affect your performance at work or even activities of daily living. It is usually managed by treating the underlying conditions. There is no cure for most other cases of tremor, but symptoms can be managed with medications and therapies. Medications that may help include antiepileptics, benzodiazepines, beta-blockers, botulinum toxin, levodopa, and carbidopa. Other treatment options are physiotherapy, occupational therapy, eliminating substances that induce tremor, deep brain stimulation and thalamotomy.
