Uses of Dinoprostone

Dinoprostone is commonly used to treat cervical ripening, induction of labour and augmentation of labour.

How Dinoprostone Works

Dinoprostone is a prostaglandin E2 which exerts its action on uterine smooth muscle, stimulating contraction and cervical relaxation for starting or altering the labour process. It also acts as a vasodilator on blood vessels and as a bronchodilator on the bronchial muscle.

Side Effects of Dinoprostone

Diarrhea, Nausea, Vomiting, Cardiac arrest, Hypertension, Fever, Hypersensitivity reactions, Uterine hypertonus, Uterine rupture, Abruptio placenta, Rapid cervical dilatation, Uterine hypercontractility with/without foetal bradycardia or foetal distress/altered foetal heart rate (FHR), Neonatal death, Stillbirths, Vaginal irritation, Asthma, Bronchospasm

Dinoprostone Related Warnings

Alcohol Not Advisable

There may be drug interactions when using Dinoprostone concurrent with drinking alcohol hence It may be unsafe to do so.

Pregnancy Limited Data

Prostin E2 Vaginal Tablets are only used during pregnancy to induce labour. The decision is to be made only after consultation with your doctor and assessment on the pregnancy.

Lactation Safe If Prescribed

Dinoprostone can be excreted into human milk and is capable of suppressing lactation, especially during the 1st month of postpartum. Nonetheless, there are no indications for Dinoprostone to be used during breast-feeding period.

Driving Not advisable

Dinoprostone will initiate labour and driving while in labour will affect your ability to concentrate and drive.

Kidney High Risk

Dinoprostone should not be used by patients with active renal disease as it could affect the metabolism or excretion of PGE2. Please consult your doctor before using it.

Liver Safe If Prescribed

Dinoprostone should not be used by patients with active hepatic disease as it could affect the metabolism or excretion of PGE2. Please consult your doctor before using it.
