Fenofibrate is commonly used to treat high cholesterol and high triglycerides

How Fenofibrate Works

Fenofibrate activates lipolysis and reduces production of apoproteins. With reduced lipoproteins level, it will also lead to a reduction in very low and low density fractions (VLDL and LDL) but an increase in high density lipoprotein fraction (HDL).

Fenofibrate Related Warnings

Alcohol Not Advisable

It is unsafe to consume alcohol with Fenofibrate. Generally, consuming alcohol will increase triglyceride level and may also damage the liver. Patients with high alcohol intake is at risk of developing rare side effects of myopathy and/or rhabdomyolysis. Please consult your doctor before using it.

Pregnancy Not Safe

Fenofibrate may be unsafe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown adverse effects on the fetus, however, there are limited human studies. The benefits from use in pregnant women may be acceptable despite the risk. Please consult your doctor before using it.

Lactation Limited Data

The safety of Fenofibrate for use during lactation is unknown. Limited human data suggests that 160mg tablets should not be used in nursing mothers.

Driving Generally Safe

Fenofibrate cause minimal to no side effects which could affect your ability to concentrate and drive.

Kidney Use With Care

Fenofibrate should be used with caution in patients with mild to moderate kidney disease. Dose adjustment of Fenofibrate may be needed. Please consult your doctor before using it. Use of Fenofibrate is not recommended in patients with severe kidney disease.

Liver Limited Data

Fenofibrate should not be used in patients with liver disease due to inadequate data. Please consult your doctor before using it.
