Uses of Lansoprazole

Lansoprazole is commonly used to relieve symptoms such as acidity and heartburn. it is also used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease acid reflux, intestinal ulcers, peptic ulcer disease and stomach ulcers.

How Lansoprazole Works

Lansoprazole is a type of antacid which a proton pump inhibitor. It works by inhibiting the adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) enzyme system that is present on the parietal cells hence reducing the gastric acid secretion.

Alcohol Not Advisable

It is not advised to consume alcohol with Lansoprazole. Taking alcohol increases acidity in your stomach, thus can worsen your symptoms and reduce the efficacy of Lansoprazole.

Pregnancy Maybe Safe

Lansoprazole is not recommended in pregnancy. Animal studies have shown no risk for the fetus. However, there are limited well-controlled human reproductive studies. The benefits and risks of using this medication must be properly weighed if the usage is necessary during pregnancy. Please consult your doctor.

Lactation Limited Data

Lansoprazole use should be avoided during lactation. Limited aminal studies suggest that there are some amount of Lansoprazole excreted in milk. However, it is unknown if Lansoprazole is excreted in human breast milk. Please consult your doctor.

Driving Not advisable

Do not drive unless you are feeling well. Lansoprazole may cause side effects such as dizziness, vertigo, visual disturbances or sleepiness, all of which could affect the ability to concentrate and drive.

Kidney Safe If Prescribed

Lansoprazole is safe to be used in patients with kidney disease. Dose adjustment of Lansoprazole may not be required. Please consult your doctor.

Liver Limited Data

Lansoprazole should be used with caution in patients with moderate to severe hepatic impairment. The reduction in the daily dose of Lansoprazole and monitoring of liver function tests is required for these patients. Please consult your doctor.
