Vigabatrin is commonly used to treat Epileptic seizures
Vigabatrin acts by increasing the level of the inhibitory neurotransmitter, Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and suppress the repetitive neuronal firing by inhibiting the voltage-sensitive sodium channels.
Drowsiness, Fatigue, Irritability, Headache, Neurological disturbance, Visual disturbance, Gut disturbance, Liver dysfunction
There is no known interaction between Vigabatrin and alcohol but alcohol may worsen the progression of epilepsy. Thus, the use of alcohol is not recommended in patients with epilepsy.
Animal studies have shown reproductive toxicity but there are limited data showing the risk of Vigabatrin use during pregnancy due to the presence of concomitant antiepileptics. Thus, Vigabatrin is not advisable to be used during pregnancy unless the benefits outweigh the risks. Please consult your doctor.
Vigabatrin is known to be secreted in human milk but there is limited data on the effects on breastfed babies. Thus, the decision on discontinuing breastfeeding or the medication should be made. Please consult your doctor.
Do not drive unless you are feeling well. Vigabatrin may cause side effects such as drowsiness or visual disturbance, all of which could affect your ability to concentrate and drive.
Dose adjustment and caution use may be needed in patients with kidney impairment.
Vigabatrin is safe to use in patients with liver impairment.
