A Hajj & Umrah Prerequisite

Alongside Covid vaccination, it is also compulsory for all pilgrims traveling to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to be vaccinated against meningococcal disease which can commonly cause inflammation in the brain lining (meningitis) and bloodstream infection.

The Saudi Arabia government also strongly recommends pneumococcal vaccination to protect the pilgrims against the pneumococcal disease that can cause severe illnesses such as pneumonia.

FAQs
Meningococcal and pneumococcal disease are two types of bacterial infections that can cause severe illness and even death.

Meningococcal disease is caused by Neisseria Meningitidis bacteria. This infection commonly affects the brain lining and causes meningitis (meningococcal meningitis) or bloodstream infection (septicemia).

Pneumococcal disease, on the other hand, is caused by the bacteria Streptococcus Pneumoniae. It usually causes infection in the lung (pneumonia) but it is also one of the common causative organisms for meningitis.
Mass gatherings like hajj and umrah are attended by millions of people from many different countries every year. As more people gather, the risk of transmitting diseases gets higher as well.

Meningococcal and Pneumococcal diseases are often a cause of concern during hajj and umrah as these bacterias get easily transmitted through respiratory droplets, especially in crowded places (i.e saliva, sneezing, etc.), therefore it is important that hajj and umrah pilgrims protect themselves by getting vaccinated.
Everyone visiting the holy land for pilgrimage is required to take the meningococcal vaccine.

The pneumococcal vaccination, on the other hand, is not mandatory; but the Ministry of Health highly recommends it.
The pneumococcal and meningococcal vaccines have been certified halal by IFANCA (US).

IFANCA (US) is a recognised foreign halal certification authority by JAKIM Malaysia.
