Cardiogenic Shock

Overview

Cardiogenic shock is when the heart is unable to pump sufficient blood to meet the demand of the body. This mostly caused by a heart attack and arrhythmia. The outcome of cardiogenic shock is fatal and can cause death

Signs and Symptoms

Rapid breathing, Severe shortness of breath, Rapid heartbeat (tachycardia), Loss of consciousness, Weak pulse, Low blood pressure (hypotension), Sweating, Pale skin, Cold hands or feet, Urinating less than normal or not at all

Common Causes

Myocarditis, Endocarditis, Drug overdoses

Risk Factors

Older, Have a history of heart failure or heart attack, Have blockages (coronary artery disease) in several of your heart's main arteries, Have diabetes or high blood pressure, Female

Investigation Techniques

Blood pressure measurement, Electrocardiogram (ECG), Chest X-ray, Blood tests, Echocardiogram, Cardiac catheterization (angiogram)

Treatment and Prevention

Inotropic agents, Aspirin, Thrombolytics, Antiplatelet medication, Angioplasty and stenting, Balloon pump, Coronary artery bypass surgery, Heart transplant
