Corns

Overview

Corns are thick and hardened layers of skin that develop when the skin attempts to protect itself from pressure and friction. They happen more commonly on the fingers, hands, toes, and feet. They can be unsightly.

Signs and Symptoms

Hardened and raised bump which is surrounded by inflamed skin, A thick and rough area on the skin, Dry, flaky or waxy skin, Pain or tenderness on the affected area when pressed

Common Causes

Friction and pressure from repetitive actions such as playing instruments, writing or using certain hand tools, Wearing ill-fitting shoes such as tight or loose-fitting footwear and high heels, Wearing shoes without socks

Risk Factors

Treatment and Prevention

Trimming away excess skin, Callus-removing medications such as patches or gel containing salicylic acid, Antibiotics if infected, Using custom-made padded shoe inserts, Surgery to correct bone deformities, Can be prevented by wearing socks, gloves and comfortable shoes
