Cough With Mucus

Overview

Cough is a reflex action in order to clear the airways of mucus and irritants such as smoke or dust. Cough with mucus is any cough that produces phlegm. It rarely means anything serious. Most cases clear up within 3 weeks and do not need any treatment. Cough is usually accompanied by other signs and symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, wheezing, runny or stuffy nose, postnasal drip, sore throat and hoarse voice. Common causes of cough include upper and lower respiratory tract infections, allergic rhinitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, chronic bronchitis, inhalation of irritants such as smoke or dust, tuberculosis, whooping cough, and croup. It is usually managed with cough suppressants, expectorants, mucolytics, and decongestants. Persistent cough, especially at night, can affect your sleep quality. Cough can also be exhausting and reduce your energy level to perform activities of daily living. They may feel restricted when attending social events too.
