Cynaotic Congenital Heart Disease

Overview

Cyanotic Congenital Heart Disease is a disease present at birth. It is caused by a defect in the heart which changes the way blood flows through the heart and lungs. Cyanosis occurs because the blood flowing to the body is lacking oxygen.

Signs and Symptoms

Cyanosis (bluish discolouration of the skin and mucous membrane), Poor feeding, Hyperventilation, Tachypnea, Tachycardia, Delayed growth, Clubbing of fingers

Common Causes

Tetralogy of Fallot, Transposition of great arteries, Total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage, Truncus arteriosus

Risk Factors

Genetic syndromes such as Down's syndrome and Marfan's syndrome, Infection during pregnancy, Gestational diabetes, Chemical exposure during pregnancy, Family history of congenital heart disease

Investigation Techniques

Full blood count, Chest x-ray, Hyperoxia test, Echocardiography

Treatment and Prevention

Adequate ventilation and circulatory support, Correct metabolic acidosis, IV antibiotics, IV prostaglandin E, IV morphine, Corrective heart surgery
