Dental Infections

Overview

Dental infection is the infection of teeth with cavities, gums or the bone that accommodates the teeth. This is usually caused by a bacterial infection and abscess sometimes will form which will lead to pus discharge from the affected area. The plaque, a by-product of food and saliva attached to the teeth or gums frequently carries bacteria, if left unnoticed or not removed, bacteria will multiply and spread inside the soft tissues of teeth or gums, forming an abscess.

Signs and Symptoms

Pain in the affected area especially when biting or upon touching, Teeth sensitivity to cold or hot food, Halitosis (Foul-smelling oral cavity), Fever, Unable to open mouth, Difficulty in swallowing

Risk Factors

Poor oral hygiene, Excessive consumption of sugary or starch food and drink, Injury or previous surgery to teeth or gums, Immunocompromised individuals (AIDS, Diabetes mellitus, Chemotherapy patients)

Treatment and Prevention

Surgical incision to drain the abscess, Removal of the affected tooth, Painkillers (Aspirin, Ibuprofen), Antibiotics (Amoxicillin, Metronidazole)
