Ewing's Sarcoma

Overview

Ewing Sarcoma is a rare type of cancer that occurs in bones or the soft tissues around the bones. This cancer most often begins in the long bones of the pelvis, legs or arms, but it can occur in any bone.

Signs and Symptoms

Pain at the affected area, Swelling at the affected area, Bone pain, which may worsen at night or with physical activity, Unexplained tiredness, Fever with no known cause, Unintended weight loss, Broken bone with no known cause, A palpable mass at the affected site

Common Causes

A genetic mutation that causes Ewing sarcoma, Some cases have unknown causes

Risk Factors

No clear risk factors for Ewing sarcoma are known

Investigation Techniques

Physical examination, Full blood count, Serum creatinine, Serum urea, Blood culture, Erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein level, Liver function test, Lactate dehydrogenase, Arterial blood gas, Bone biopsy, Chest X-ray, CT scan of the affected site, MRI scan of the affected site, PET-CT scan of the affected site, Bone scan, Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy

Treatment and Prevention

Chemotherapy, Radiation therapy, Surgery, High dose chemotherapy with stem cell rescue, Ensure a healthy diet is consumed, Limit physical activity depending on where the affected site is, Ewing sarcoma can't be prevented as there is no known cause for the disease
