Fungal Infections Of Eye

Overview

Fungal Infection of Eye can occur either on the cornea of the eye called as fungal keratitis or it can occur deep in the eyeball, called as fungal endophthalmitis. It can be caused by fungi such as Aspergillus or Candida.

Signs and Symptoms

Feeling of foreign body in the eye, Eye pain or discomfort, Eye redness, Blurring of vision, Excessive tears, Whitish discharge from the eye, Increased sensitivity to light

Common Causes

Eye trauma or injury, Eye surgery such as corneal transplant or cataract surgery, Chronic eye disease

Risk Factors

Old age, Preexisting eye disease, Long term corticosteroid use, Contact lens, Previous eye surgery

Investigation Techniques

Eye examination, Slit-lamp examination, Potassium hydroxide (KOH) wet mount

Treatment and Prevention

The oral antifungal medication, Antifungal eye drops, Corneal transplant, Rest to the eye, Warm irrigation
