Fungal Infections Of Vagina

Overview

Fungal Infection of Vagina is the most common vaginal infection and caused by Candida albicans, a type of fungus. Hence, it is called vaginal candidiasis. This fungal infection is not sexually transmitted.

Signs and Symptoms

Thick curdy vaginal discharge, Vulval itchiness, Dyspareunia (pain during sexual intercourse), Dysuria (pain during urination), Vulval edema, Redness of vulva

Common Causes

Candida albicans, Other Candida species

Risk Factors

Pregnancy, High dose combined oral contraceptive pill, Immunosuppression, Recent use of broad-spectrum antibiotics, Diabetes mellitus, Hormone replacement therapy, HIV

Investigation Techniques

Vaginal swab, Gram stain, Wet film examination

Treatment and Prevention

Topical antifungal cream, Oral antifungal medication
