Head Lice

Overview

Head lice are parasitic insects that feed on blood. These parasites live closely to the human scalp, eyebrows, and eyelashes. They are very common infestation among children. They are contagious but they do not spread any diseases.

Signs and Symptoms

Itching of the scalp, Tickling sensation on the scalp, Presence of lice on scalp, Presence of lice eggs (nits) on the hair shaft, Sores on scalp

Common Causes

Head to head contact with a person infested with head lice, Sharing hair grooming items with a person infested with head lice, Sharing fabric items such as bed and pillow with a person infested with head lice, Sharing clothing and towels with a person infested with head lice

Risk Factors

Younger age group, Children going to play schools or nursery, Having hair groomed in salons, Living in overcrowded areas

Wood lamp examination

Treatment and Prevention

Permethrin, Pyrethrin, Benzyl alcohol, Lindane shampoo, Essential hair oils, Wet-combing the hair with a nit comb, Wash bedding and towels with hot water, Do not share the same hair grooming items, Frequent cleaning of hair grooming items
