Herpes Zoster

Overview

Herpes Zoster virus is caused by the reactivation of a primary infection with varicella-zoster virus. Herpes zoster virus known as shingles occurs more in the elderly whereas varicella-zoster virus known as chickenpox occurs more in children but can also occur in adults.

Signs and Symptoms

Vesicles on skin about 2 to 3 mm in size, Pain or burning sensation, Itchiness, Redness or erythema of the skin

Reactivation of varicella zoster virus

Risk Factors

Old age group, HIV or AIDS, Certain drugs that can weaken the immune system, Had chickenpox before, Contact with people who have herpes zoster infection, Not vaccinated

Investigation Techniques

Physical examination, Tzanck smear, Viral culture

Treatment and Prevention

Antiviral therapy such as acyclovir, Tricyclic antidepressant, Topical capsaicin
