Hyperphosphotaemia

Overview

Hyperphosphataemia is a condition of raised phosphate level in the blood. It is commonly seen in patients with chronic kidney disease as well as in other conditions. The condition is rarer than hypophastaemia but easily manageable.

Signs and Symptoms

Usually no symptom, Joint pain, Renal/back pain, Itchiness, High blood pressure, Symptoms of hyperparathyroidism

Common Causes

Acute kidney injury, Chronic Kidney Disease, Hyperparathyroidism, Tumour lysis syndrome, Rhabdomyolysis, Familial tumour calcinosis, Acromegaly, Vitamin D toxicity

Investigation Techniques

Serum urea and electrolytes and phosphate level, eGFR level, Serum parathyroid hormone level, Urinary dip test

Treatment and Prevention

No treatment in healthy adults except to drink plenty of water, Use of phosphate binder such as sevelamer, Supplementary with calcium carbonate, Dialysis in severe and symptomatic patient
