Lymphomas

Overview

Lymphomas are disorders caused by malignant proliferations of lymphocytes. These accumulate in the lymph nodes causing lymphadenopathy. Lymphomas are histologically divided into Hodgkin's Lymphoma and Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

Signs and Symptoms

Painless and non-tender asymmetrical firm discrete and rubbery enlarged superficial lymph nodes, Fever, Pruritus, Weight loss, Night sweats, Weakness, Fatigue, Splenomegaly, Hepatomegaly

Genetic mutation

Risk Factors

Age, Gender, Family history of lymphoma, Previous Epstein-Barr infection, Exposure to certain chemicals and drugs, Radiation exposure, Autoimmune disease

Investigation Techniques

Full blood count, Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP), Blood urea and serum electrolytes, Serum LDH, B2-microglobulin, Serum uric acid, Liver function test (LFT), Chest X-ray, CT scan, PET scan, Bone marrow aspirate, Lymph node biopsy

Treatment and Prevention

Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy, Bone marrow transplant
