Prevention Of Diphtheria Tetanus And Whooping Cough

Overview

Diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (DTaP) vaccine is the ideal way of preventing diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough (pertussis). In Malaysia, the DTaP vaccine is routinely given to children at the age of 2 months, 3 months, 5 months, and 18 months. A booster dose for diphtheria and tetanus is given at the age of 7 years and another one at the age of 15 years. Other ways to prevent the disease include avoiding close contact with people who are infected. Next, keep your hands clean by washing them with soap and water, or alcohol-based hand rub. If you are sick, stay at home to prevent spreading the disease to other people. Close contacts should be treated with antibiotics or a booster dose of the vaccine.
