Overview

Hepatitis A virus is spread through close contact with infected people and food. This can be prevented with 2 injections of the hepatitis A vaccine. Family members should also be given an immunoglobulin injection which will protect them for 3 months. Patient with hepatitis A will develop symptoms and signs such as fever, weakness, jaundice or swelling of liver and spleen. Ways to prevent the disease include avoiding close contact with people who are infected with hepatitis A, clean toilets and bathrooms frequently, clean frequently touched surfaces, avoid handling food with hands, and do not share cutlery. The virus can spread through close contact or through food. Hence, keep your hands clean by washing them with soap and water, or alcohol-based hand rub.
