Soft Tissue Infection

Overview

Soft tissue infection which is also known as skin and soft tissue infections are infections that involve skin, subcutaneous tissue, fascia and also muscle. These infections can present differently ranging from something as simple as cellulitis to a rapidly developing necrotizing fasciitis that can also be life-threatening or cause loss of a limb. Soft-tissue infections also can be called and named differently depending on the appearance and also locations. Examples of soft tissue infections are impetigo which usually happens in children around their mouths and appears as crusty gold like lesions. Folliculitis is the infection of the hair follicles in our skin. Folliculitis can develop into furuncles that contain pus. Carbuncles develop from collection of multiple furuncles. Necrotizing fasciitis is the worst form of soft tissue infection. It is also known as a flash eating disease where the infection at this stage results in the death of the surrounding tissues. Infection of the skin and soft tissue can caused by single or multiple organisms. Common ones include, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes.
