Syndromic Treatment Of Vaginal Discharge

Overview

Vaginal discharge is a common problem in women. Vaginal discharge is the biological fluid that is secreted from the vagina. While most of the discharge is normal, some vaginal discharge may be a result of infections. Infections that cause vaginal discharge can be either sexually transmitted or non sexually transmitted infections. The most common cause of vaginal discharge is bacterial vaginosis, candidiasis and sexually transmitted infections such as trichomoniasis. Syndromic treatment of vaginal discharge refers to a treatment that covers all common possible causes of vaginal discharge. Syndromic treatment is mainly based on the signs and symptoms of vaginal discharge. This method of treatment is inexpensive and is effective as well. One of the advantages of this treatment is the need for no laboratory investigations. The medications used for the treatment of vaginal discharge are metronidazole, clotrimazole, fluconazole or tinidazole. Combinations of these drugs are used for more effective treatment.
