Warts

Overview

Warts is a small, fleshy and benign growth on the skin which are due to infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV). On average there are almost 90 subtypes on the basis of DNA sequence analysis. Each subtype of the virus has its own clinical manifestations. Among which the common warts are usually harmless and resolve by itself without any treatment.

Signs and Symptoms

Smooth, skin colored papules, Irregular and rough texture, Common on hands but may seen on face, genitalia, arms and legs, Black points on the warts

Human papillomavirus (HPV)

Risk Factors

Children and young adults, Weakened immune system, Autoimmune disorder, Premature ovarian failure

Investigation Techniques

Physical examination, Shave biopsy of the warts

Treatment and Prevention

Usually resolve by itself, Salicylic or lactic acid together with frequent and regular paring of the hyperkeatotic skin, Cryotherapy, Intralesional injection of bleomycin
