Overview

Prime-B6 25mg Tablet is a single-ingredient vitamin supplement that provides 25mg of vitamin B6 in the form of pyridoxine hydrochloride in each tablet. Vitamin B6 is a water-soluble B vitamin that the body cannot make on its own, so it must come from food or supplements. Pyridoxine hydrochloride is the form of vitamin B6 most widely used in supplements, and the body converts it into pyridoxal 5′-phosphate, the active coenzyme form.

Vitamin B6 is involved in more than 100 enzyme reactions, mainly in protein and amino acid metabolism. It also plays a role in normal energy-yielding metabolism, the formation of red blood cells and haemoglobin, the function of the nervous system and the production of certain neurotransmitters. Good food sources include fish, poultry, organ meats, potatoes, chickpeas, bananas and fortified cereals, and most people eating a varied diet get enough vitamin B6 from food alone.

The 25mg strength is well above the daily dietary requirement for adults, which is under 2mg. For this reason it is important to stay within the recommended serving, because high doses of vitamin B6 taken over a long period have been linked to nerve damage (sensory neuropathy). Prime-B6 25mg Tablet is listed in a pack of 90 tablets; please refer to the product label and packaging for the full product information.

Directions for Use

Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water, preferably with or after a meal. Take it at about the same time each day. Follow the directions on the product label or the advice of your doctor or pharmacist, and do not combine it with other vitamin B6-containing products unless advised.

Dosage

Adults: One tablet (25mg vitamin B6) daily, or as advised by your doctor or pharmacist. Follow the dosage on the product label.

Do not exceed the recommended dose. Long-term use of high doses of vitamin B6 can cause nerve problems, so do not take more than one tablet a day or use it for long periods unless a healthcare professional has advised you to. If you are pregnant, use vitamin B6 only under the guidance of your doctor. For children, use only on the advice of a doctor or pharmacist.

Side Effects

  • Common: Mild stomach upset, nausea or heartburn.
  • Common: Mild headache or drowsiness.
  • Uncommon: Skin rash or increased sensitivity of the skin to sunlight.
  • Serious: Numbness, tingling, burning sensations in the hands or feet, or unsteadiness when walking – these may be signs of vitamin B6-related nerve damage with high or long-term intake; stop taking it and see a doctor.
  • Serious: Allergic reaction such as swelling of the face, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing – seek medical help immediately.

Contraindications

  • Do not use if you are allergic to pyridoxine (vitamin B6) or any other ingredient of the tablet.
  • Avoid if you have, or have had, peripheral neuropathy linked to vitamin B6, unless your doctor advises otherwise.
  • Not suitable for people taking levodopa alone (without carbidopa or benserazide), as vitamin B6 can reduce its effect.

Drug / Food Interactions

  • Levodopa: Vitamin B6 can reduce the effect of levodopa taken on its own; this is not usually a problem with levodopa-carbidopa or levodopa-benserazide combinations, but check with your doctor.
  • Antiepileptic medicines: Phenytoin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine and valproic acid can lower vitamin B6 levels, and higher doses of vitamin B6 may lower phenytoin and phenobarbital levels; consult your doctor before use.
  • Isoniazid and cycloserine: These tuberculosis medicines can deplete vitamin B6; your doctor will advise whether supplementation is needed.
  • Theophylline: People taking theophylline may have low vitamin B6 levels; discuss supplementation with your doctor.
  • Other vitamin B6 sources: Many B-complex, multivitamin and energy products contain vitamin B6; add up your total daily intake to avoid excessive amounts.

Quick Tips

  • Take only one tablet a day unless your doctor or pharmacist tells you otherwise.
  • Check the labels of your multivitamins, B-complex and energy drinks so your total vitamin B6 intake does not become too high.
  • Stop and see a doctor if you notice new numbness, tingling or unsteadiness.
  • If you have morning sickness or nausea during pregnancy, speak to your doctor before taking any vitamin B6 product.
  • Take the tablet with a meal if it upsets your stomach.
  • Tell your doctor you take vitamin B6 if you are on levodopa or seizure medicines.

Relevant Information

Precautions: Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have kidney or liver disease, have Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy or any nerve condition, or are taking other medicines or supplements. High intakes of vitamin B6 over long periods can cause sensory nerve damage; in the United States the adult upper limit is set at 100mg a day, and European authorities have recommended a much lower limit, so avoid combining several vitamin B6-containing products.

When to See a Doctor or Pharmacist: Stop taking the tablets and see a doctor if you develop numbness, tingling, burning pain, loss of balance or skin reactions. During pregnancy, nausea and vomiting should be assessed and managed by your doctor, who can advise whether vitamin B6 is suitable and at what dose. Seek help immediately if you notice signs of an allergic reaction.
