How Azelastine Works

Azelastine selectively blocks H1-receptors on effector cells, inhibiting the release of histamine involved in the allergic response. It also inhibits the accumulation of other inflammatory mediators.

Azelastine Related Warnings

Alcohol Not Advisable

It is unsafe to consume alcohol with Azelastine. Taking Azelastine with alcohol may reduce CNS function and alertness.

Pregnancy Not Safe

Azelastine may be unsafe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown adverse effects on the fetus such as foetal death, growth retardation, skeletal malformation. However, there are limited human studies. The benefits from use in pregnant women may be acceptable despite the risk. Please consult your doctor.

Lactation Not Advisable

Azelastine is not safe to be used during lactation as it is excreted into milk in low quantities.

Driving Generally Safe

Azelastine may cause side effects such as mild and transient irritation. It is unlikely to affect vision to any greater extent. Patient should be advised to wait until the symptom clears before driving.

Kidney Safe If Prescribed

Dose adjustment of Azelastine is not needed in patients with renal impairment.

Liver Use With Care

Dose adjustment of Azelastine is not needed in patients with liver impairment.
