Donepezil is commonly used in the treatment of azheimer's disease and dementia in parkinson's disease.

How Donepezil Works

Donepezil is an anticholinesterase. It works by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase which is an enzyme to break down acetylcholine. It results in increasing concentration of acetylcholine in the CNS.

Diarrhea, Muscle cramps, Fatigue, Nausea, Vomiting, Headache, Difficulty sleeping (insomnia), Abnormal dreams, Hallucination, Urinary incontinence, Anorexia

Donepezil Related Warnings

Alcohol Not Advisable

Taking Donepezil with alcohol may have additive effects in worsening side effects such as headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, and/or changes in pulse or heart rate.

Pregnancy Not Safe

Donepezil may be unsafe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown side effects on the fetus, however, there are limited human studies. The benefits from use in pregnant women may be acceptable despite the risk. Please consult your doctor.

Lactation Limited Data

Donepezil is probably unsafe to use during lactation. Animals studies showed Donepezil is excreted in the milk of rats. Limited human data suggests that Donepezil does not represent a significant risk to the baby.

Driving Not advisable

Do not drive unless you are feeling well. Donepezil may cause side effects such as dizziness, muscle cramps or tiredness, all of which could affect the ability to concentrate and drive.

Kidney Use With Care

Donepezil should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease. Dose adjustment of Donepezil may be needed. Please consult your doctor.

Liver Limited Data

Donepezil concentrations may build up in patients with severe liver disease due to it is extensively metabolised in the liver. Dose adjustment of Donepezil may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
