Esomeprazole is used in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease, acid reflux, heartburn and peptic ulcer disease which includes stomach ulcers and intestinal ulcers. it is mainly used to reduce acidity in the stomach.
Esomeprazole belongs to a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors. It works by suppressing the secretion of gastric acid through inhibition of proton pump, H+/K+ ATPase in the gastric parietal cell. Esomeprazole is the S-isomer of omeprazole.

It may be safe to consume esomeprazole with alcohol. However, it is better to avoid alcohol as alcohol worsen GERD symptoms which may cause higher dose of esomeprazole needed to treat the symptom.
There is insufficient data from human studies that demonstrated risk to the fetus. However, animal studies have found that esomeprazole may contribute to harmful effects towards fetal development though they do not indicate direct or indirect effect. It is recommended to practice caution when using Esomeprazole in pregnant women.
There is limited data on whether esomeprazole is excreted in human breast milk. The safety profile of Esomeprazole is uncertain to be used during breastfeeding. Therefore, it is better to avoid Esomeprazole.
Esomeprazole usually does not affect the ability to drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.
For patients with impaired renal function, dose modification is not required. However, it is recommended to use with caution in patients with severe renal impairment and the dose must be adjusted.
For patients with impaired liver function, dose modification is not required. However, it is recommended to use Esomeprazole with caution in patients with severe liver impairment and the maximum dose of 20mg should not be exceeded.
