Mupirocin is commonly used to treat severe bacterial infections.

How Mupirocin Works

Mupirocin works by binding to isoleucyl transfer ribonucleic acid (tRNA)-synthetase and thus inhibiting the synthesis of protein by the bacteria. It is bacteriostatic at minimal inhibitory concentrations and bactericidal at higher concentrations.

Alcohol Safe

It is safe to drink alcohol while using mupirocin.

Pregnancy Maybe Safe

Animal studies did not demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are inadequate human studies in pregnant women. Mupirocin should only be used if the benefits outweigh the potential risks to the fetus.

Lactation Limited Data

It is not known whether mupirocin is excreted in breast milk, therefore care should be practised if the usage during breastfeeding is indicated.

Driving Generally Safe

Mupirocin usually does not affect the ability to drive. Do not drive unless you are feeling well.

Kidney Use With Care

Mupirocin should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease. However, dosage adjustment is unnecessary.

Liver Limited Data

It is safe to use mupirocin in patients with liver impairment. Adjustment of dosage is not required.
