Dry Eyes

Overview

Dry eye is a condition where the eyes are unable to produce adequate tears as a lubricant for the eyes. This can cause a degree of discomfort to the patient and leads to disturbance of vision and eye infection.

Signs and Symptoms

A stinging/ burning or scratchy sensation in your eyes, Stringy mucus in or around your eyes, Sensitivity to light, Eye redness, A sensation of having something in your eyes, Difficulty wearing contact lenses, Difficulty with nighttime driving, Blurred vision or eye fatigue

Common Causes

Decreased tear production, Increased tear evaporation, Imbalance in tear composition

Risk Factors

Being older than 50, Woman, Eating a diet that is low in vitamin A, Wearing contact lenses

Comprehensive eye examination, Measure your tear production using the Schirmer test, Determining the quality of your tears.
