Genital Herpes Infection

Overview

Genital Herpes Infection is a sexually transmitted infection. It is mainly caused by Herpes simplex type 2 virus. However, Herpes simplex type 1 virus can also cause it. This viral infection can spread through person to person contact.

Signs and Symptoms

Painful blisters or vesicles at genital area and buttocks, Fever, Fatigue, Malaise, Swollen lymph nodes, Muscles ache, Painful urination, Urethral discharge, Urinary retention

Common Causes

Sharing towels or clothes with someone with herpes simplex virus infection, Sexual contact with someone with herpes simplex virus infection, Oral sex

Risk Factors

Age, Multiple sexual partners, Unprotective sex, Weakened immune system, Already have sexually transmitted infection (STI)

Investigation Techniques

Physical examination, Tzanck smear, Viral culture, Immunofluorescence, Serology

Treatment and Prevention

Oral acyclovir or famciclovir or valacyclovir, Topical acyclovir
