Herpes Labialis

Overview

Herpes Labialis is an infection of the lips and mouth by the Herpes simplex type 1 virus mainly. It is also known as oral herpes or cold sores. It is contagious and can be transmitted from person to person.

Signs and Symptoms

Cold sore lesion around the lip border, Fever, Sore throat, Malaise, Fatigue, Swollen lymph nodes, Muscle ache

Common Causes

Sharing drinks or food with someone with herpes simplex virus infection, Kissing someone with herpes simplex virus infection, Sharing eating utensils with someone with herpes simplex virus infection

Risk Factors

Age, Hormonal changes, Weakened immune system, Dental procedure or surgery, Upper respiratory tract infection

Investigation Techniques

Physical examination, Tzanck smear, Viral culture, Immunofluorescence, Serology

Treatment and Prevention

Oral acyclovir or famciclovir or valacyclovir, Topical acyclovir
