Pertussis

Overview

Pertussis is a respiratory tract infection characterized by sudden recurrance or intense cough. Commonly the causative organism for this condition is Bordetella Pertussis. It still remains as the most significant cause of morbidity and mortality among the children below 2 years old.

Signs and Symptoms

Nasal congestion, Rhinorrhea, Sneezing, Low-grade fever, Tearing, Conjunctival suffusion, Sudden recurrance of intense coughing lasting up to several minutes followed by a loud whoop, Post-tussive vomiting and turning red with coughing, Chronic cough which may last for week

Common Causes

causative organism for this condition is Bordetella Pertussis

Risk Factors

Nonvaccination in children, Contact with an infected person, Epidemic exposure, Pregnancy

Investigation Techniques

Blood test, Nasal and throat swab sample, Blood culture, PCR Assay & ELISA, Chest X Ray

Treatment and Prevention

Azithromycin, Prevention through DTaP immunization at the ages of 2, 4, 6, and 15-18 months and at age 4-6 years remains the best defense in the fight against pertussis
