Mania

Overview

Mania is a condition where the person will have distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood and abnormally and persistently goal-directed behavior or energy, lasting for at least one week and take place most of the day

Signs and Symptoms

Inflated self-esteem or grandiosity, Decreased need for sleep, More talkative than usual or pressure to keep talking, Flight of ideas or subjective experience that thoughts are racing, Attention is easily drawn to unimportant or irrelevant items, Psychomotor agitation, Excessive involvement in pleasurable activities that have a high potential for painful consequences

Common Causes

Biological differences, Genetics factor

Risk Factors

Having a first-degree relative (Family History), Periods of high stress such as the death of a loved one or other traumatic event, Drug or alcohol abuse, Low socioeconomic status

Full blood count, Urine toxicology, MRI, CT Scan, Liver function test, Electroencephalogram

Treatment and Prevention
