Can Food Trigger Asthma? What To Eat And What To Avoid?

Asthma And Diet: Can Food You Eat Trigger Asthma? - DoctorOnCall

While a lot of people know asthma, many people are unaware of what causes asthma or what can trigger it. One of them is food. This is because some people can be allergic to certain foods. The allergic reaction of every individual is different depending on the quantity of food eaten and the type of allergy they have.

Almost 50% of asthmatic patients get an asthma attack when they are exposed to allergens. Besides that, there are also selective cases triggered by chemicals such as food preservatives. Therefore, asthma and food allergies are associated with one another. Some foods have high histamine levels and may thicken the mucus layers in the airways and tragically can worsen the symptoms of an asthma attack. Therefore, it is very important to monitor what types of foods you eat to prevent asthma attacks and put your asthma under control.

Types of foods that asthmatics need to be cautious with

1. Dairy product

Dairy products such as milk, cheese, yoghurt, ice cream, or butter are examples of foods that cause asthma. Over-consumption of dairy products is often associated with excessive mucus production in the lungs which in turn exacerbate the inflammations.

Thereby, you are encouraged to stop consuming dairy products for a few weeks and observe the asthmatic symptoms either it is improving or getting more worse.

If you experience only mild symptoms, then you are advised to limit the consumption of dairy products and consume in a moderate amount to maintain a balanced diet.

For example, yoghurt, although it has the capacity to trigger asthma symptoms, studies have shown yoghurt significantly can improve the function of the digestive system if it is taken in moderate proportions. This is because yoghurt contains good bacteria known as prebiotics which is essential to maintain a healthy intestine.

Please discuss with your doctor further whether or not you are advised to take diary products and if it can worsen your asthma.

2. Fatty foods

Fatty foods such as red meat, fried foods, cakes, doughnuts, and coconut milk are examples of the worst foods for asthma and can induce inflammations and eventually weaken lung functions.

These foods can also cause weight gain and someone with asthma may find it challenging to maintain an ideal weight if they are overweight or obese. The lung of overweight people who works harder than normal individuals can cause a detrimental effect on health.

However, not all fatty acids are harmful to your health. There are foods containing healthy fats such as avocados, olive oil, nuts, and salmon which contain omega-3 oils that can help asthma patients to fight against inflammations.

3. Processed foods

Nowadays many processed foods contain artificial preservatives and colourings.

Foods such as fast food, frozen foods, and fried foods are unfriendly for asthma patients and should be avoided. Instead, eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables to maintain your healthy diet.

Processed foods are delicious to eat but can be detrimental to your health, especially in a long run. According to studies, people who eat processed meats more than four times per week may find the symptoms of asthma aggravate within seven years.

4. Foods that will make you gassy

These types of foods are often associated with diseases such as GERD or gastritis. Patients with asthma also may have a tendency to get allergies from them. The gas from the foods brings pressure to the diaphragm which in turn causes discomfort in the abdomen and results in symptoms such as shortness of breath.

The following are a list of foods that should be taken in moderate amount for asthma prevention:

  • Garlic

  • Broccoli

  • Asparagus

  • Sugary foods

  • Carbonated drinks

5. Foods containing sulfite

Foods containing sulfites are abundantly used in preservatives. It functions to keep the food imperishable and prevent bacterial growth. It is estimated about 5% -10% of people with asthma are allergic to sulfites. Sulfite generally releases sulfur that can cause narrowing of the airway and finally triggers an asthma attack such as sudden shortness of breath.

Examples of foods that contain sulfites are as follows:

  • Lemon juice or fruit juice

  • Dried fruits

  • Apple cider vinegar

  • Peeled potatoes

  • Shrimp and shellfish

Although the percentage is less prevalent, foods containing sulfites can cause life-threatening side effects in people who are allergic to it such as anaphylaxis. If you have symptoms for example itching, stomach ache, headache, a sudden drop of blood pressure, difficulty in swallowing or breathing then quickly take the action by seeking emergency help.
