What are the different types of COVID-19 test available in the market now?

There are a number of different ways to test for COVID-19 in the body, with the most common and easy to perform tests being the RT-PCR and the RTK-Antigen tests, also known as diagnostic tests. Another form of testing is called the antibody test.
Diagnostic tests such as RT-PCR and RTK-Antigen are able to show if you have an ACTIVE infection of COVID-19.
Antibody tests on the other hand shows if you had a PAST infection of COVID-19.
The main types of COVID-19 tests that are commonly used in Malaysia are the RT-PCR test and RTK-Antigen test.

What is the difference between the RT-PCR test & RTK-Antigen test? Which COVID-19 test is best and most accurate?

The RT-PCR test identifies the virus’ genetic material, whilst the RTK-Antigen test identifies specific protein from the virus. The RT-PCR test has a higher accuracy compared to the RTK-Antigen test and is considered a gold standard test for the diagnosis of COVID-19.
You may do the RTK-Antigen which is less sensitive but the results will be ready within the same day. Do note that a negative RTK-Antigen test may still require a RT-PCR test for confirmation at the discretion of the Doctor.

Where can I find COVID-19 test services in Malaysia?

One who wishes to get tested for COVID-19 in Malaysia can do so at clinics or hospitals approved by the Ministry of Health, Malaysia (MOH). You can also book your test online.

What are the steps taken during the procedure of covid-19 testing in Malaysia?

Firstly, you will need to fill in forms to provide ample details to the centre. Next, a nasopharyngeal swab will be done by inserting a 6-inch cotton bud through the nostrils and throat. In some occasions, nasopharyngeal wash or aspirate, sputum, or tracheal aspiration may be taken too. The samples will be stored appropriately and will be tested within 24 to 72 hours. The results will be informed as soon as it has been yielded.

Does COVID-19 test have side effects?

Common complaints from patients that had undergone the COVID-19 test include feeling uncomfortable during the procedure. Very rarely, the introduction of a 6th-inches swab may cause infection. Nevertheless, these side effects are temporary and manageable.

Is COVID-19 test procedure painful?

The COVID-19 nasal-throat swab test procedure involves placing the swab into the mouth and through the nostrils into the palate. It is quick, but may cause slight discomfort particularly when the swab is inserted through the nostrils into the palate.

Is COVID-19 test taken through mouth?

In Malaysia the swab sample for RT-PCR test will be taken from your nasopharynx which will be through your nostrils and mouth. It is also called nasal and throat swabs.

How long will it take to get COVID-19 test results?

The results for the RT-PCR test usually take between 24 to 72 hours, depending on the diagnostic centre’s capacity to process the samples. Results for the RTK-Antigen test are usually known within 15-30 minutes, but the official report generation from the providers might take up to 24 hours.

Can you buy COVID-19 test kit?

How accurate is COVID-19 test?
