Diaper Rash

Overview

Diaper rash is a common type of dermatitis among babies. It is usually due to wet or infrequent change of diapers. It appears as bright red patches on the baby's bottom.

Common Causes

Irritation from stool and urine, Chafing or rubbing, Irritation from a new product, Bacterial or yeast (fungal) infection, Introduction of new foods, Sensitive skin, Use of antibiotics

Risk Factors

Young age (<2 years), Diarrhea, Underlying dermatologic disorder, Infrequent diaper changes

Investigation Techniques

Potassium hydroxide test of skin scraping, Bacterial culture of skin, Fungal culture of skin, CBC, Serum zinc level

Treatment and Prevention

A mild hydrocortisone (steroid) cream, An antifungal cream if your baby has a fungal infection, Topical or oral antibiotics if your baby has a bacterial infection
