Gums are firm, pink tissue that is full of blood vessels that cover the bottom part of the teeth and jawbone. Loose and spongy gums are felt when there is inflammation of the gums. This causes the gums to swell around the tooth or the affected area and feel loose as it detaches from the root of the teeth. This occurs mainly due to poor dental hygiene. Risk factors that may lead to loose and spongy gums are aggressive brushing, smoking, poor nutrition, dry mouth, diabetes and immunodeficiency disorders such as HIV. Loose and spongy gums can be prevented with proper brushing of the teeth, flossing habits, gargling the mouth with warm saltwater, drinking plenty of water and regular visits to the dentist every 6 months. If loose and spongy gums is not prevented or treated well, it may lead to complications such as gingivitis, periodontal disease and loss of teeth.
