Morning Sickness

Overview

Morning sickness is also known as nausea and vomiting of pregnancy. It is a common problem affecting up to 70% of pregnant women. It usually begins around the 6th week of pregnancy and may last from weeks to months. Some cases of morning sickness last for a short period each day, while others may last for hours. A severe form of morning sickness is known as hyperemesis gravidarum. Morning sickness may be caused by the increase in hormones such as estrogen and human chorionic gonadotropin and low glucose level. The condition can be aggravated by stress, certain food or physical exhaustion. Things that may help people feel better to include eating small meals, drinking plenty of water, avoiding triggers, getting adequate rest and keeping the house well ventilated. Supplements and medications like vitamin B6, doxylamine, diclegis, antiemetics, anticholinergics, and antihistamines can be prescribed if needed.
