Uses of Bisacodyl

Bisacodyl is commonly used to treat constipation.

How Bisacodyl Works

Bisacodyl is a type of laxative. It works by irritating the smooth muscles of the large intestine and increases the bowel movement. It also encourages more water and electrolyte to be secreted into the intestines, building up to facilitate bowel movement as well.

Side Effects of Bisacodyl

Diarrhea, Abdominal cramps/discomfort, Nausea, Vomiting, Electrolyte Disturbance, Blood in stool, Sense of head spinning, Allergic rashes

Alcohol Safe

It is safe to consume alcohol with Bisacodyl.

Pregnancy Not Safe

Bisacodyl may be unsafe to use during pregnancy. Studies on animals have revealed some adverse effects. However, there are no well-controlled studies in pregnant women. It is still possible to take Bisacodyl if the benefits outweigh the risk. Please consult your doctor before starting on Bisacodyl.

Lactation Limited Data

Bisacodyl is not recommended to use during lactation without a doctor's consultation. Limited human data suggests that Bisacodyl does not represent a significant risk to the baby, but a consultation with the doctor would be best to evaluate the risks and benefits.

Driving Not advisable

Do not drive unless you are feeling well. Bisacodyl may cause side effects such as dizziness or vertigo (the sensation of your head spinning) which could affect your ability to concentrate and drive.

Kidney Safe If Prescribed

Bisacodyl should be safe in patients with kidney disease. However, it could cause dehydration as well which will have severe effects in patients with kidney failure, hence will require monitoring.

Liver Limited Data

Bisacodyl is safe for patients with liver disease.
