Bromhexine is commonly used in the treatment of respiratory tract disorders associated with viscid mucus.
Bromhexine is a mucolytic. Firstly, it lessens the viscosity of mucus in the respiratory tract. Secondly, it increases the activity of the ciliated epithelium (little brushes that help sweep mucus away in the respiratory tract) to increase the expulsion of mucus.

There is no data on the use of bromhexine in pregnant women. It's safety profile towards the fetus is still unknown and until it has been established, bromhexine should be used with caution.
There are limited data on bromhexine being excreted in breast milk and is therefore not recommended for breastfeeding as of now as the risks cannot be determined. Please consult your doctor.
