Uses of Cimetidine

Cimetidine is commonly used in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease, acid reflux and peptic ulcer disease.

How Cimetidine Works

Cimetidine is an antacid. It competitively inhibits H2-receptors of the gastric parietal cells and reduces the gastric acid secretion, gastric volume and hydrogen ion concentration.

Side Effects of Cimetidine

Diarrhea, Headache, Dizziness, Tiredness, Tachycardia, Myalgia, Arthralgia, Rashes, Confusion, Hypersensitivity reactions

Cimetidine Related Warnings

Alcohol Not Advisable

It is unsafe to consume alcohol with Cimetidine. Taking Cimetidine with alcohol may enhance gastric mucosal irritation.

Pregnancy Maybe Safe

Cimetidine may be safe to use during pregnancy. Animal reproduction studies have not shown any risk to the fetus. However, Cimetidine does cross the placental barrier and hence must be used with precaution. Please consult your doctor.

Lactation Limited Data

Cimetidine is probably safe to use during lactation. Cimetidine is excreted in breast milk. Limited human data suggests that Cimetidine does not represent a significant risk to the baby. Please consult your doctor.

Driving Generally Safe

Cimetidine usually does not affect the ability to drive. Do not drive unless you are well.

Kidney Use With Care

Cimetidine should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease. Dose adjustment of Cimetidine may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
